Origin:

Native to North America

Grow Lupines in full sun or light shade. They require rich organic soil with slight acidity and good drainage. They thrive in cool climates, and find it difficult to survive in areas with extremely hot summers. Applying mulch around the root zone will help to keep the roots cool and will protect them over the winter. Deadheading spent flowers will prolong the bloom time, as well as rejuvenate the plants in cool areas. These plants tend to attract aphids, but this can be avoided by cutting them back periodically, or spraying for the pests before they become a problem.

Feed lightly at each watering with 75-100 ppm N.

Vernalization:

Lupines are cold beneficial but we do recommend vernalizing them for 8-10 weeks at temperatures below 45° F. This greatly increases the bud count and uniformity.

Pests & Diseases:

Aphids, thrips and whiteflies are the most common pests.
Ascochyta, Colletotrichum, downy mildew, powdery mildew and rust can cause foliar diseases on lupines. Crown and root rots may be caused by the pathogens Fusarium, Phytopthora, Pythium and Rhizoctonia.
It is best to avoid having moisture remain on the plant for too long. Water in the morning to allow the foliage to dry before sunset.

Potting & Timing:

Plant lupines in a high quality, well-drained, bark based media.

Moisture:

Moderate to slightly dry. When irrigation is needed, water thoroughly and then allow media to dry slightly.

Planting Level:

The top of plug should be level with the soil line.

PGRs/Pinching:

Multiple spray applications of 2,500-ppm daminozide (B-Nine or Dazide), 20-ppm paclobutrazol (Bonzi, Paczol or Piccolo), or 2,000-ppm daminozide + 3-ppm uniconazole (Concise or Sumagic) at seven-day intervals.

Lighting:

Long days (14-16 hours) are required to force into flower.
