Bergenia 'Happily Ever After' Heartleaf Bergenia

Common Name: Heartleaf Bergenia, Pigsqueak

Find your garden's fairytale ending with 'Happily Ever After' Bergenia. This perennial Pigsqueak will impress early in the season with large clusters of near-white flowers on tall, sturdy scapes. The stems of the flower scapes are a dark red, providing contrast between the flowers and foliage. Dark green leaves grow to a massive size, with a rippled edge to each leaf. While this plant is capable of growing from full sun to shade, it will thrive when given additional moisture in full sun and afternoon shade in the south.

Bergenia can be used in a variety of ways in the landscape. It is most impressive when used as a durable, evergreen groundcover, but it can also be used in containers and rock gardens. It is quite effective at softening the hard edges of pavement and also works well as an edging or filler plant in flower borders.

Bergenia thrives in almost any amount of sunlight, but partial shade is ideal. In northern regions, it will grow in full sun, but it needs afternoon shade in the south. In either region, plants will always perform the best in rich, moisture-retentive soil. However, it dislikes heavy soils and standing water.
